Weld for Itanium Processor

چکیده
Sharma, Saurabh Weld for Itanium Processor (Under the direction of Dr. Thomas M. Conte) This dissertation extends a WELD for Itanium processors. Emre Özer presented WELD architecture in his Ph.D. thesis. WELD integrates multithreading support into an Itanium processor to hide run-time latency effects that cannot be determined by the compiler. Also, it proposes a hardware technique called operation welding that merges operations from different threads to utilize the hardware resources. Hardware contexts such as program counters and the fetch units are duplicated to support for multithreading. The experimental results show that Dual-thread WELD attains a maximum of 11% speedup as compared to single-threaded Itanium architecture while still maintaining the hardware simplicity of the EPIC architecture. On 8 July 2002, Intel introduced the Itanium 2 processor—the Itanium architecture’s second implementation. This event was a milestone in the cooperation between Intel and Hewlett-Packard to establish the Itanium architecture as a key workstation, server, and supercomputer building block. The Itanium 2 processor may appear similar to the Itanium processor, yet it represents significant advances ...

The architecture of the Intel® Itanium® processor was specifically designed not only to provide unprecedented computational advantages, but also to enable development of systems with substantially greater security than is possible with other existing and evolving processor architectures. The security advantages offered by the Intel Itanium processor architecture are real, and are urgently neede...

Designed for the high-end server market, the processor provides features (see the sidebar, next page) that maximize system reliability and availability. These features include fault coverage at the hardware level, a configurable multilevel error containment strategy, an availabilit...
متن کاملCompilation for the Itanium Processor
This paper describes a just-in-time (JIT) Java1 compiler for the Intel Itanium processor. The Itanium processor is an example of an Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computing (EPIC) architecture and thus relies on aggressive and expensive compiler optimizations for performance. Static compilers for Itanium use aggressive global scheduling algorithms to extract instruction-level parallelism. In a...

0272-1732/00/$10.00 2000 IEEE The press and the technical community have generated much excitement and speculation about the IA-64 instruction set and the Itanium processor. Intel and HewlettPackard have rolled out (one instruction at a time) the instruction set. Intel is rolling out (one transistor at a time) the Itanium processor and other platform components. This special issue provides th...
